Oxford Colleges

For those who are confused about the poll question, well, you’re probably not alone.

Oxford, like Cambridge (as well as Durham and parts of U of Toronto) has a college system. There are 39 colleges, which are independent from the University. Oxford University provides all academic instruction, support, admissions, etc. The colleges provide a lot of the rest: accommodation, meals (if desired), financial guidance, social networks, sports teams, etc. And they can (although mostly for undergrads) form a part of a student’s identity while at Oxford.

A good overview of the colleges can be found here.

I’ve fond the most important things in a college to be: proximity to town centre, history (many are hundreds of years old), good facilities such as library, student social areas, and maybe for pride and exercise: a history of sports. Good food doesn’t hurt.

I’m at Jesus College at Cambridge this year, which is just about perfect. 500 years old but unpretentious, near the town centre, but with large amounts of sports fields and green space, and relaxed, engaging students. Hopefully I can find as great a fit at Oxford.

In!

I got the letter in the mail today. The official-looking form letter from oxford that nonetheless says the magic words:

“On behalf of the Admissions Committee for the Oxford Masters in Business Administration (MBA) I am delighted to offer you a place for the academic year 2008-2009″

Happy times!
